Swap 304 for 304H below 500°C, and the two behave almost the same. The difference only shows up once sustained temperature pushes the material into creep territory.
Both are austenitic chromium-nickel alloys with the same base chemistry: 18 to 20 percent chromium and 8 to 10.5 percent nickel. Neither age-hardens like 17-4PH; strength comes from solid solution strengthening and grain size control.
What is the difference between 304 and 304H Strip?
The real difference is carbon. Standard 304 caps carbon at 0.08 percent with no minimum; 304H holds 0.04 to 0.10 percent, with a stated minimum, plus a grain size of ASTM No. 7 or coarser. That minimum carbon supports carbide formation at grain boundaries during extended heat exposure, driving 304H's improved creep and stress-rupture strength. Chromium, nickel, and room-temperature mechanical minimums under ASTM A240 stay identical between the grades.
Held between 425°C and 860°C, chromium combines with carbon to form carbides at grain boundaries in both grades. 304H supplies enough carbon to reinforce those boundaries under sustained load at 600°C to 700°C, which is why ASME Section II, Part D, assigns it higher allowable stress values above roughly 500°C, with continuous service up to 815°C (1500°F). Below that threshold, a gasket or shim gains nothing from the H designation.
That same precipitation cuts the other way in corrosive service: once sensitized, the material loses some resistance to intergranular corrosion and room-temperature ductility. A part running hot and dry rarely feels the heat, but one cycling between heat and moisture needs the tradeoff weighed against a stabilized grade like 321.
What is the H in 304H stainless steel Strip?
304H stainless steel strip has been a popular choice for construction and industrial applications due to its durability and resistance to corrosion. The "H" in 304H stands for high carbon, indicating that this type of stainless steel has a higher concentration of chromium and nickel than the standard 304 alloys, giving it higher strength and improved ability to resist corrosion. The increased strength makes the stainless steel 304H strip an excellent choice for parts exposed to harsh conditions and certain types of chemical processing environments. This versatile material can also be found in many components used in automobiles, aircraft manufacturing, medical equipment, and food-safe consumables.
What does 304H mean?
304H is a grade of stainless steel. It is austenitic stainless steel composed mainly of iron, chromium, and nickel. The H in 304H stands for high strength and higher carbon content than other alloys in the 304 series. Compared to other stainless steel alloys, 304H has excellent machinability, weldability, and oxidation resistance properties while also being resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion. In many industrial applications, 304H offers enhanced performance due to its increased tensile strength and yield, making it the optimal grade for your project need.
Is 304H austenitic stainless steel?
3ASTM A666 covers 304H strip in annealed and cold-worked tempers, but the two don't combine well: cold work's strengthening recovers at the same temperatures where the carbon-driven mechanism is meant to perform, so H-spec strip is almost always ordered annealed.
First, select the sustained service temperature. Then, verify whether the design uses allowable stress values from ASME Section II, Part D, and finally assess what the part experiences after service: dry heat or intermittent moisture.

FAQs
SS 304H strip meets ASTM A240 and A666, carrying 18–20% chromium, 8–10.5% nickel, and carbon fixed between 0.04% and 0.10%, with grain size at ASTM No. 7 or coarser.
UNS S30409 identifies 304H stainless steel strip, separate from standard 304's UNS S30400 designation, through the controlled minimum carbon and grain size requirements built into the H-grade spec.
Finish options for 304H strip include 2B, BA (bright annealed), No. 4 polished, and mill finish. 2B remains standard for forming work below the sensitization range.
304H resists corrosion in dry, oxidizing service due to its chromium oxide layer, but exposure between 425°C and 860°C sensitizes grain boundaries, lowering intergranular resistance in moist or cyclic service.
Jainex Steel Impex supplies 304H strip that meets ASTM A240 and A666 specifications, and each coil comes with mill test certificates confirming its chemistry and grain size.
