Different Grades of Monel Pipe

Two grades cover most industrial requirements: Monel 400 and Monel K500.

Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is a nickel-copper alloy. Monel will not corrode significantly in seawater, hydrofluoric acid and many alkalis. Typical applications are marine components, chemical processing equipment and heat exchangers. It works across a broad temperature range and is easy to fabricate.

Monel K500 (UNS N05500) has the same base composition as Monel 400 but with aluminium and titanium added. These additions allow age-hardening, which pushes the tensile strength considerably higher. Pump shafts, valve stems, and fasteners in offshore and marine environments are common applications.

The practical difference is that if the job needs corrosion resistance and standard strength, Monel 400 is sufficient. If the part carries mechanical load in a corrosive environment, K500 is the right pick. Temperature and pressure conditions do affect the choice, so it is worth checking with your application engineer before finalising the grade.

Types of Monel Pipes & Tubes
